Do you have this problem – you are seeking small business ideas so you can build a something with the schedule and the lifestyle you dream of – but you have no idea where to start?
You want your new business to be different and exciting, something that stands out from the crowd. Unfortunately, most of the small business ideas you’ve thought of so far are already being done.
And, of the halfway decent ideas you can think of, you worry they are too small or silly to work. What if you don’t have what it takes to make it happen?
First things first – No idea is too silly or dumb.
The worst case scenario is that ideas might need to be tweaked a bit so they’ll be a money maker for you, but almost any idea can be built into a business.
Second, never waste time worrying that you don’t have what it takes to be successful with your own business.
The only way you are guaranteed to fail is if you don’t try at all or give up when the going gets rough (and it will eventually get rough).
Lastly, it makes absolutely no difference if there are a million other companies with the same small business ideas you have.
They are not you. No one has your exact background, experience, and unique perspective. What you offer will be different because you are different – that’s a great thing.
Oh yeah, a little hint about small business ideas that a million people seem to be all be doing…
If there are people making money in the area you are most interested in, that means you can make money too. If no one else is selling anything in a certain area, then no one in that area is interested in buying (a.k.a. there may not be a market for it). Just some food for thought…
All that being said, how can you come up with the right idea for you? Let’s work through a few questions to help you discover the perfect small business idea for you.
I suggest getting away for a few hours, or a day, or even a weekend. Go to the beach, the mountains, a local park, a resort – somewhere you can be alone to think through each of these questions and have time and space to craft what your ideal business will look like.
Once you’ve completed the questionnaire, you should have three small business ideas that really resonate with you. Now start sharing those ideas. Don’t worry about people stealing them – most people are too scared to start a business in the first place. Just share and see what others think. You’re wanting to get a sense for which of the ideas will have the best response and market.
Next, you will want to share with strangers as well so you can get unbiased feedback – if you can find some ideal clients to share it with, that would be the best (for instance, if your ideal clients are single moms, try finding some single moms to get feedback from). It’s great to ask your mom, spouse, and best friend but they will give a biased answer because of your relationship.
If you’d like some free, unbiased feedback on your idea I’d be happy to share my thoughts with you. When you download the questionnaire above you will get an email from me. Simply respond to that email with your ideas and I’ll be in touch asap.
Some parting advice before you go:
- You are unique and have a very specific voice, do not be afraid to share this.
- No idea is too small or silly – it may just need some tweaking.
- Don’t give up, no matter what. If your WHY is big enough, see your idea through.
- The biggest secret to building a successful business is action. All of those successful entrepreneurs out there took action, that’s why they are where they are today. Yes, they made mistakes and didn’t have it perfect when they started, but the key takeaway is that they actually started, then kept going. They didn’t give up.
Don’t give up! You can do this.

You’re going to want to spend some quality, undisturbed time thinking them over. Don’t rush, take your time. In the end, you should have a pretty strong idea of what your new business will be.
