You may never know what results come from your action but if you do nothing there will be no result. – Mohandas Kanamchand Ghandi
Welcome to day one of the 20-days to build a business challenge! Today we are going to start where all new entrepreneurs should start but seldom do – with your vision.
Why do you want to build a business? Is it to earn extra money from home? Replace an income? Quit a job you hate? Pursue your passion? Sit down and write out exactly why you want a business.
Your Why needs to be more than money. Explore your inner motivations for wanting a business. The day will come when things get hard, and if your only “Why” is money, it will likely not be strong enough to keep you going.
When people say they want more money, it is usually to purchase something. Is it to stay home with kids? To quit a day job? To buy something special? If you couldn’t use money as a reason – if it were completely off the table – what would your why be?
Building a business is hard work and long hours (despite the 4-hour workweek hype). If your why isn’t strong, it will be easier to throw in the towel when you get discouraged. By solidifying your why, you are storing up ammo for those tough days. The ammo you can use to keep fighting for your dreams.
Besides your why you’ll also want to picture your ideal day. What does a day in your dream life look like? How do you spend the morning, afternoon, and evening? What role do your friends and family play in your new life? Do you have any new activities you able to start? Where do you work? What hours?
Think of every perfect moment and write it down or draw it out. You need to make your vision crystal clear. If you’re an artist, draw it. Visual person? Cut out or print photos of what that life looks like. If you are auditory, record yourself talking about it. If kinesthetic, build a representation of your new life.
You want your vision to include anything that represents this new life. Get as detailed as possible. No matter your method, make it clear and make it your own.
This may seem superfluous, but I assure you it is not. As I said, things are going to get discouraging and, at times, downright painful. You need to have your goals and ambitions front and center to pull yourself out of these tough times.
Find an inspirational place to be alone. Somewhere inspiring to think and dream. Bring along your tools of choice (notebook, recording device, photos, building materials, etc.photo) and create. Write out your Why and the Vision of your new life. Post a picture of your creation in the comments below. If you are not comfortable sharing your vision, write “completed” below so we know you completed day 1.
This is the fun part, so enjoy the process and dream big.
